THE ILLINOIS COLLECTION
Mechantiques is excited to announce the acquisition of an old time
collection out of Illinois (sorry, the estate won’t let us use the
name of the collector) of antique mechanical musical instruments.
This collection ranges from disc music boxes to cylinder music boxes,
to phonographs and some pneumatic instruments, including some rare
pieces. While a number of pieces sold immediately, there are still
many fine and interesting pieces left. Read and enjoy! Our regular
inventory begins at the end of the “Illinois list” - incidentally,
if you are interesting in buying a wholesale lot of 1100 (that’s right,
eleven hundred!) original music box discs, read further!
DISC MUSIC BOXES
K-4 Regina Style 8 Automatic Changer With 27” Discs
Beautiful case style, see Page 204 of Bowers, with carved dragons
on single door but with no gallery (no evidence that it ever had a
gallery). Refinished, mahogany. Interior picture could use replacing.
Combs have some surface rust, may have some pitting. Has the regular
back (with hinged door), lithograph has been cut to a curved shape.
Currently jamming, but everything is there and fine mechanically,
but needing some adjustment. With 12 discs. $19,500.
K-7 Polyphon Style 104 Upright 19 5/8” Disc Music Box
See Bowers page 155 bottom center. Without base, pediment, or motor
cover. New knob on drawer. Combs discolored. Coin operated but coin
mechanism is not shutting it off. Misalignment is causing the drive
gear to miss the drive holes in the disc so it is not “playing” but
it is “running” fine. Missing damper rails, which is reflected in
the very low price - they are available in England. With 12 discs.
$3700.
K-8 Miraphone 15 ½” Disc Double Comb Model with Gorgeous Matching
Base Cabinet
Rare combination table model, originally played phonograph records
as well as music box discs, but phonograph parts are missing. Labeled
Lyon & Healey Duo-Empress, having been private label marketed through
the department store Lyon & Healey in Chicago. Base molding is off
but with the machine. Playing but bass is not playing properly. Includes
a very scarce and very attractive original base cabinet for disc storage,
very good quality, with columns and paneling and all. Disc cabinets
are much harder to find than the music boxes. What a great combination!
Will be a very unusual and desirable piece when restored. With 12
discs. (SOLD)
K-55B Reginaphone Style 240 With Lion’s Heads, Sold By Columbia
Beautiful mahogany Reginaphone style 240 with the serpentine case
and carved lion’s heads on the corners. This is one that was sold
under the Columbia Graphanola name (Columbia made the phonograph parts
for all of these Reginaphones). Older restoration, but the bass is
not playing properly - needs some combination of adjustment to center
spindle, comb placement, or dampers. Combs are very fine, at least
one damper, probably more, needs adjustment. Not stopping at end of
tune, minor adjustment. Speed control gear is missing. Complete with
tone arm and turntable. Refinished with the finish being a little
more satiny than the original, very pretty and well done. Missing
upright dividers in storage area below, but includes some old phonograph
record holders that fit like they are original to the machine. $9200.
K-10 Polyphon Single Comb 15 ½” Disc Table Model
One tooth missing. Floral inlaid lid. Pretty box. With 12 discs.
$2350.
K-11 Capital Cuff Box Style B
This is by far the rarest size Capital Cuff box. These wonderfully
unusual boxes use a “cuff” style interchangeable music rather than
a disc or cylinder, a real innovation but not very popular and as
a result quite scarce today. This is an exceptionally clean example.
With five cuffs (more available). $5500.
K-12 Symphonion 10 5/8” Double Comb Disc Music Box
Plain black case, leads appear to be bad, double comb, cut corner
style bedplate. Front wind. Stencils on case are in poor condition.
Crack in lid. 12 discs. $950
K-16 Polyphon 11” Disc Double Comb Music Box
This has been modified to sit upright, has glass on the front, coin
slot on top (don’t know if mechanism is there). Not starting. Combs
and leads look very good. Double comb, top wind, twelve discs. (HOLD)
CYLINDER MUSIC BOXES
K-22 Exceptional D. Allard Interchangeable Cylinder Box with Six
Cylinders and Serpentine Case
With six 15” cylinders. We have had this style and size Allard once
before, about eight years ago. Very handsome serpentine case with
brass inlay (some is popping out). Excellent combs with some surface
rust. Mirror on inside of lid - clearly this was a very expensive
music box when new. Excellent combs. The last one had a really exceptional
sound when restored. (HOLD)
K-24 G. Baker-Troll Sublime Harmonie 13” Interchangeable Cylinder
Music Box
Tune sheet for six cylinders however there is only one cylinder with
the box. Missing inner glass lid. Plain case, some veneer problems
all around. Eight tune. Four replaced teeth, two tips need replacing,
needs regulation. Speed control not working. $2,400.
K-25 Nicole Freres 17 ¾” Cylinder Mandoline Style Music Box
Eight tunes, late example. 129 teeth on two combs. Beautiful large
brass and pearl inlay on top. Will be a very fine sounding music box
with really lovely arrangements. Mechanism very oily, and runs slowly
(thus the extra oil I suppose!). $3400.
K-27 17 1/8” Cylinder Music Box with Six Bells
Twelve tune, coarse comb. With six bells. One replaced tooth. Pretty,
large floral inlay on top. Damper squeaks, but will sound very nice.
$2,800.
K-28 10 ¾” Cylinder Orchestral Music Box
Has drum, castanets and five bells with flowers on bells and butterfly
strikers. Fine combs, zither, many damper squeaks but otherwise playing
well. Has had some restoration. Burled case, lid warped, minor veneer
problems on case. Damper noise. $2800.

BEGINNING OF OUR REGULAR SALES LIST
Polyphon 22 ¼” Upright With Barbells
This should be here in about two weeks, call for information.
Mermod Freres Ideal Sublime Harmony Piccolo Cylinder Box with Eight
18” Cylinders and Matching Table
Really lovely large Mermod Freres with eight 18” cylinders stored
in a drawer in the music box and a drawer in the lovely matching table
with Queen Anne legs. From original family - we are told that this
music box was used on a private railroad car of the Hannibal and St.
Joseph Railroad Co. by Richard S. Brownlee, the great great grandfather
of the fellow we purchased it from! Fine original condition except
for three broken teeth, three tips broken, one tip replaced, and the
table has some varnish bleaching from the sun, and has some minor
veneer chips. Needs normal cleaning and polishing after all these
years, also the grease in the spring barrel is partly locked up. These
large Mermod Freres music boxes are generally considered the finest
of the late 1800’s music boxes. (SOLD)
Exceptional Bremond 4-Tune Mandolin Cylinder Box
This is a very fine ratchet wind Bremond with 13” X ~2 ¾”cylinder
and approximately 193 teeth! Being a four-tune music box, the comb
is very fine. Being Mandolin style, the arrangements are really wonderful.
Very fine original condition. Case is 21.5” X 8.5” by 6” high. Tunes:
The Wedding March; Ever of Thee; Home Sweet Home; Evangeline. We have
not picked this up yet, call for more details. $5800.
Rare Euphonia Short Bedplate 15 ¾” Disc Music Box
You aren’t likely to find another one of these, I think this is
only the second we have had in 30 years. Beautiful mahogany case
with spectacular metal fittings on all the corners, ornate cast
feet (one is broken), escutcheon - certainly one of the prettiest
table model disc boxes you will ever see. Rare short bedplate single
comb mechanism. This is a very late derivative from the F.G. Otto
Company as I recall. Very nice condition, light surface rust on
comb, with 13 of the rare Euphonia discs in good condition. Missing
bottom of case, no fast/slow lever or mechanism, the worm gear is
stripped and the crank threads are stripped, three tears in lid
picture. $2,000.
Criterion 15 ½” Disc Music Box with Oak Carved Case
15 ½” double comb Criterion with five broken teeth (only two are
grouped) in double comb. Both damper rails are missing. One foot
is missing and the lid stay is broken but there. Not stopping at
end of tune (lever works as instant stop/start). Carved leaves design
on front on case. Crack in square in center of lid. $2100.
Melodi-Pan Monkey Organ
24 key. 14 visible round pipes in front, plus about 19 pipes underneath
(one of which looks like a replacement). American tunes. Case marquetry
says: “Angelo Bassi; Lodz, 12 Nowo-Lagiewnicka.12; Melodi-Pan. Looks
very interesting, much like a typical Harmonipan. $5250.
30-key Trumpet Monkey Organ
Lots of marquetry on the front. Make is currently unknown, however
there may well be an inlaid maker’s name under some heavy varnish,
which we will be able to check when it gets here. 30-key, 52 pipes
(including larger pipes in front, but not exposed). Includes eight
trumpet pipes. Looks and sounds like a Bruder or Frati. Music includes
a great rendition of “Valencia”, the organ barrel is pinned/arranged
like a German market organ. Case is 22 ½” wide, 15” deep, 24” high.
Plays very strongly, with a deep rich sound, but needs restoration,
including work on the keyframe. Inlaid center design, missing cloth
to cover open areas in front. $6,500.
Unusual 22-Key Street Barrel Organ With Two Barrels, Metal and
Wood Pipes
Probably Spanish, with 18 metal and 27 wood pipes, early example.
Not working but complete and in good condition, requires normal
restoration. Includes two multi-tune barrels. “Upright” style with
barrel in the lower front section. $4,000.
Capital Cuff Box Style A
Oak, with four cuffs. Recently mechanically restored, plays great.
These odd transitional style music boxes are very difficult to find,
having been made in quite small quantities (as is evidenced by the
low serial numbers). With five cuffs. $3600.
DISCS! DISCS! DISCS! Wholesale Lot Of 1100 Original Music Box
Discs
We accumulate discs and never make an effort to sell them. Now
we have an excessive stock again after wholesaling about 700 some
ten years ago. We are moving to a different showroom (great place,
waterfall and all!) and would like to once again wholesale virtually
our entire stock of original discs at a bargain price. These range
from 5” discs to 27” discs, with the bulk in the 15” - 21” range.
There are a total of 1100 priced at $15,000 for the lot. Contact
us for an approximate inventory.
Original Mahogany Cylinder Music Box Table
Boy are these scarce! I think this is the first cylinder music
box table we have had, separate from a music box, in 3-4 years or
more. This is a lovely mahogany queen anne style table with lovely
carved curved legs and carved all around. It does not have a drawer,
instead it has a sound box with a panel underneath and lyre style
cutouts on the top. There is a raised molding around the top edge
(to keep the cylinder box from sliding off). The interior of the
molding measures 20” deep by 38 ½” wide. The overall measurements
of the table are 23” deep, 28 ½” high, 41 ½” wide. Very very difficult
to find. $2000.
Beautiful Viennese Gilt Musical Wall Clock
Excellent condition, very attractive, 44cm X 55cmm or 17 3/8” X
21 5/8”. Excellent very nice Viennese cylinder movement from the
1880s. Lovely “Olbrich, Vienna” movement. See Bowers Encyclopedia,
page 89, upper right corner, for a similar example. $2,000.
North Tonawanda Cabinet Style Pianolin with Two Ranks of Pipes
and Art Glass
Cabinet style. Has replacement glass, has had a full restoration
some time ago but needs some “tweaking” to get it playing right,
primary problem is a slipping belt. Looks great. With 5 or 6 rolls,
and Dick Hack promises there will be a recut project in coming years.
Having a piano plus two ranks of violin and flute pipes in such
a compact cabinet is really great. See Bowers page 538 upper left
corner. $10,500.
Porter Italian Bombe Inlaid 15 ½” Double Comb Music Box
This is one of the great new music boxes made by the Porter Music
Box Company in Randolph, Vermont. This is in the very decorative
inlaid Italian bombe style case with curved sides. Made in 1981,
in excellent condition. $4800.
Olympia 9” Single Comb Disc Music Box
Plain case, two broken teeth. Runs slowly, 9 discs, unusual separate
drawer for discs that music box sits on, oak - should be refinished.
Lid stay incomplete, lid closure hardware missing. $1200.
Musical Desktop Clock With Painted Face
Lovely ball shaped clock with music box, setting on receptacle
with legs (including one that also acts as the key). Beautiful painted
or enameled scene on face. Markings: Dioishein-Goldschindt; Fils
& Co. Swiss; Fab. Suisse; Metal Dore; La Timbale Enchantee; Fab.
Suisse; Metal Dore. Very pretty piece, probably early 1900’s. $900.
Jean Billon-Heller Interchangeable Cylinder Box
These are typically delightful sounding, loud and very bright -
although this one is not playing at this time, since we have not
had anyone to look at it. Has six 6” cylinders stored in a section
in the bottom of the case with a flip down door, each cylinder is
marked with a paper strip with three tune titles on it (although
the snail has six points). In generally good condition but with
four broken teeth, needs new worm gear, case needs some gluing,
and the center inlay is missing on top. Case is 15 ½” wide, 10 ¼”
deep, 9” high. $1850.
North Tonawanda Military Band Organ Style 173
See Bowers page 910. Similar to Wurlitzer 150. Lots of brass trumpets.
Converted to Wurlitzer 150 rolls. Double tracker bar. This is a
big, strong brass trumpet military organ - you’ll wake up your neighbors
with this one! Working very well. Measures 30” deep (plus 3 ½” for
pulley), 71 ¼” high (plus 4” for casters and 20” to top of tallest
drum on top), 48 ½” wide (plus 4 ½” to edge of pulley in back).
$24,000.
Cylinder Music Box With Hidden Drum
That’s right, hidden drum - no bells. This originally had hidden
bells as well but they are missing, although the bell comb is still
there. Very pretty case with large floral inlay, warp to lid, beautiful
brass handles and large brass escutcheon. Case is 25” wide, 10 ¼”
deep, 9” high. Cylinder is 15” x 2 ¼” with 9/84/6 teeth, one broken,
some surface rust. Smooth bedplate, SN 43396. Plays, very bright
lot of damper noise, should be repinned, no tune sheet, probably
eight or ten tune. $1400.
Goodale Console Phonograph playing Celluloid Strips
Unique, complete with copies of patent papers. Floor model, two
horns, lots of brass, you will never see another. $12,500.
Table and Cylinders Only For Interchangeable Cylinder Music Box
How depressing, we have this lovely original table, with two drawers,
for an interchangeable cylinder music box, along with five very
nice 14” eight-air mandolin cylinders, and the original tune sheet
for these and several additional cylinders. But no music box. If
you have the right music box, this lucky find will more than double
its value. $3500.
Early Brass Recording Telegraph Machine
Beautiful large all brass recording telegraph machine. Complete
with wheel for paper inside drawer below. Made by Siemens Brothers
& Co., London, #24079. $1650.
Seven Huge Cylinders, No Music Box
What a great music box these cylinders must go to! There are seven,
they measure 19 ½” by about 3 ¼”. There are approximately 172-173
engraved dividing lines, six tunes per cylinder. Cylinders are brass.
Each has the serial number “1934” stamped on the end. Call.

ORGANETTES!
We still have some organettes left over from the famous Doc Abrams
Collection (see Bowers Encyclopedia pages 768 - 773), as well as our
normal stock of several pieces. Following is an abbreviated list,
call if you are interested: Bijou Orchestrone, wrong cranks, one hinge
missing, $650; Ariston, 24 Note, 13” cardboard disc (only one), inappropriate
replacement crank, splits in case, $325; Gem Roller Organ, needs work,

good stencils, barely works, $650; Automatic Melodista, $550; Musical
Organette, Mctammany design, $300; Celestina, very nice, wood off
crank, $800; Mascott, (On Hold). Mandolina (same as Celestina), fine
condition, plays, $800; Three Concert Roller Organs: 1) glass missing,
crank rusty, stencils 80% with especial wear or bleaching on the right
side, good unrestored condition, $625, 2) Playing but a little weak,
nice stencils, $675, 3) disassembled, needs some case work, a real
project, with one cob, $150; Rolmonica and three rolls, very nice
condition, $125. Autophone, the extremely early hand squeeze variety,
needs restoration, with four strips of music, $350.
Rare “Musical Table” Organette by The Mechanical Orguinette Co
See page 61 of McElhone’s “The Organette Book”. A rare and wonderful
walnut table that has an organette in it. Two doors underneath swing
open so you can pump the organette while you are writing on the table
or even playing cards! What a wonderful piece! I have never seen one
of these before. $2800.
Rare “Boudoir Stand” Organette, Incomplete
Wonderful and scarce organette in the unusual “boudoir stand” or
“sewing case” cabinet, floor standing. Missing the center section
of the top lid (wood with cloth on the outside, maker’s stencil on
the inside), plus another wood piece. With 10 original rolls. $750.
Watling 1c Twin Jack Pot Slot Machine
Pretty Watling in the “Treasury” style cabinet only the somewhat
plainer version without cast coins. Damage to left edge of top casting
and to wood base, glass broken, otherwise appears complete (damaged
in shipping). $1200.
Watling 5c Twin Jackpot Vendor Gold Seal Slot Machine With Stand
Some repainting done (poor job). Missing lock. The reel strips (fortune
reels) and award paper looks too good to be original. Stand is modern
but very nicely made out of heavy cast iron, very decorative Victorian
style. $1600.
Pianista Book Operated Piano - Mechanism Only
Probably out of a horizontal style cabinet with hot air engine originally.
Lots of music books. $3,400.
Tanzbars!
We have two of these, 2 ½” roll size, reddish faux mahogany finish,
one roll each, rewind cranks missing. $850 each.
Automatic Harp
This is an “Automatic Harp” made by the Ward-Stilson Co. of New London,
Ohio. A small wood instrument that looks sort of like a harp, 21”
high by 10” wide, has a small music box type movement in it. Finish
is fair. $275.
Rolmonicas
We usually have one or two of these in stock at $125 each with three
rolls.
Mesmerizer
I would almost be willing to bet that you have never seen one of
these. About 26” high, frame made of fine brass, sort of instrument
quality fittings. Has a circular mirrored concave piece, small mirrored
pieces like a dance hall rotating mirror ball, and a “globe” or “lantern
shade” style piece with jewel glass pieces, with a light bulb inside
it. The heat from the light makes the jeweled “shade” rotate and the
jeweled glass reflects off the mirrored piece. Supposedly came from
a dentist office in Kansas City and was used to “mesmerize” patients
so they wouldn’t feel the pain! You can believe what you want, but
this is a really wonderful piece of Americana. Probably late 1800’s.
$2200.
Brunswick Console Phonograph
With rare 3-way reproducer. $350.
The Encyclopedia of Automatic Musical Instruments by Q. David Bowers
Great 1000 page hardbound “bible” of antique mechanical music. Regrettably,
we are down to under 15 copies left out of the original order of 500.
Price is now $125 postpaid in the U.S. I doubt it will be reprinted
and I believe we now have the only remaining new stock.
BOOKS! BOOKS! BOOKS!
We have lots of books and other paper material related to mechanical
music. We don’t list these, but will try to work with you if you are
looking for something and can’t come here. We have copies of Barrel
Organ, Clockwork Music, and many others.

music box and wants extra discs. As a result we have well over 1,000
discs in stock of various makes and sizes. Heavy concentration in
Regina, Stella, Mira. If you want to buy in quantities of ten or more
