PP-358 Unusual Junod “Orphea”
Music Box With Six Cylinders. Unusual and scarce Junod
Orphea interchangeable cylinder music box. This was a fairly
late development which has both the spring and the governor
underneath the bedplate – it is not clear why they did this,
perhaps for aesthetics. That certainly would be consistent with
their approach to the case aesthetics, this music box has a
really gorgeous stencil on the front with the “Orphea”
designation. There is also a great “silver” medallion on the
inner lid with the engraving “No. 52”. The case, incidentally,
has a high French polish and is in excellent condition. With six
interchangeable cylinders, 13” by 2 3/8”, with six tunes each.
The mechanism is fine with two replaced tips and two replaced
teeth, older restoration. We’re told one tune on one of the six
cylinders is bad but we haven’t gotten to that yet. Music box
case is 42” wide, 20 ½” deep, 31 ½” high. The table is 42” wide,
20 ½” deep, 31 ½” high. Rare and beautiful. $8,300.

|   | P.T. Barnum’s Truly Enormous Music Box! The family we purchased this enormous interchangeable cylinder music box from swears that they saw documentation that it had come from P.T. Barnum, however we have no proof of that fact, but we have absolutely no reason not to believe it either. In any event, this is a truly outstanding music box. Simply in terms of size it is the largest and heaviest cylinder music box we have ever had. The bedplate and mechanism alone, with a single cylinder in it, weighs in at an amazing 113 pounds – undoubtedly more than Tom Thumb weighed! The bedplate alone is 46” long. Overall measurements are 55” wide, 18 ½” deep, 12” high for the music box, 66” wide, 28” deep, 31” high for the buffet style cylinder cabinet. It has two enormous springs and the largest governor we have ever seen, all resulting in a Longue Marche effect to permit very long playing on one winding (see medallion). The music box has twelve 18 ½” cylinders playing six tunes each. The mechanism has been completely restored and looks and plays like new. The case has also been extensively gone over and is very nice. The unusual aspect (besides the size) is that it is a buffet style matching base cabinet – extremely handsome, and massive. This is a museum piece by any definition of the term. With twelve cylinders. $31,500 [HOLD – HK] |
| MI-118 Nicole Freres Fat Cylinder Music Box. Lovely Nicole Freres fat cylinder music box. Cylinder is 12 1/8" by 3 <". Twelve tunes, two per turn. Older restoration and comb has had some recent expert repairs, very difficult to detect (except for one older tooth repair). Lovely sound, has had some individual repining and would benefit from some more attention to the cylinder. A few damper squeaks. Outstanding inlay on lid with rampant lions and what looks like it might be a coat of arms (albeit an odd one!) - a really impressive case. Serial number 45726. $4400. | |
|
Very Unusual Longue Marche 13” Cylinder Box With Organ, Bells, and Two Dancing Dolls. This is the first time we have ever come across this combination. A very desirable “longue marche” type cylinder music box that, because of the extra gearing and the double spring barrel plays for an extended period of time. But add to that bells, an organ section, and two dancing dolls! We just purchased this music box and it has some six tips that are damaged or missing, and is playing but the organ needs a full rebuild and the cylinder probably needs repinning. Assume it requires a full restoration. But what a neat example this is going to be – demonstrating multiple developments in cylinder music box entertainment functions. Case is 35 ½” wide, 15 ½” deep, 17” high. $3500. |

| SR-2 Magnificent Baker Troll Interchangeable Cylinder Music Box In Exquisite Serpentine Case With Matching Table and Six 18” Eight Tune Cylinders. One of the most beautiful interchangeable cylinder music boxes we have had the pleasure of handling. We have had two others with this gorgeous (but smaller) serpentine style case with metal inlay and trim, but none with the matching table. Louis XVI style serpentine walnut cabinet, sometimes referred to as “Empress Eugenie” style. Brass inlay (some need resetting) and boule trim. Three cylinder storage drawers with hinged fronts – reflecting the extreme quality exhibited throughout the manufacture of this extraordinary music box and case. Mirror on inside of lid. Really beautiful, bright sound. The three musical combs are fine. Six nickel plated cylinders, 18” long, eight tunes each. Box is 44 ¾” wide, 15 ¼” deep, 8 5/8” high. Table is 50” wide, 31” deep, 29” high. A stunning combination both visually and to hear! $26,500 | |

DK-14 Cylinder Music Box Mechanism Only, May Be Out Of Coin Operated Machine. This beautiful Columbia model mechanism looks like it came out of a station box or perhaps a large slot machine or something like that. It has a 13" cylinder and plays ten tunes. The odd gearing on the right end, and what appears to be a tune indicator lever on the left, suggest it was installed in some sort of coin operated machine. Very nice condition, may have been cleaned. Has zither with it. "USA Patent Sept 25th , 1894" cast into bedplate. Comb looks fine. $1350.

Oak Carved Mermod Freres with Four 20” Cylinders and Matching Table. This is the second largest size Mermod, and I believe it is scarcer than the 24 ½”, at least that has been our personal experience over the past 35 years. Fat cylinders, six tunes each, fine comb. This one is playing great. Has had a recent cleaning and polishing of the mechanism – I don’t think it had ever been touched up to that point, which is exactly how we love to find them but rarely do nowadays. The combs are perfect. All original, complete with original tune cards and album to hold them. Beautiful carved oak case and matching table have their original finishes, missing lid support. A rare and wonderful opportunity. $28,000. |

Rare “L’Universal” Unusual Format Interchangeable with Bells and with 17 Cylinders. These are the neatest technological developments in the entire music box field. Apparently made in extremely limited numbers, this is only the second we have ever had. See Bower’s Encyclopedia, page 63, top, for photo and description. I believe these came with and without bells, this one has three bells. Includes seventeen single tune cylinders. Large ship’s wheel for winding, decorative carved or pressed design over entire lid. Very nice restored condition. Much scarcer than the ever popular Capital Cuff Box type. With all seventeen cylinders – PRICE REDUCED TO $3600 |

Cylinder Music Box With Hidden Drum. That’s right, hidden drum – no bells. This originally had hidden bells as well but they are missing, although the bell comb is still there. Very pretty case with large floral inlay, warp to lid, beautiful brass handles and large brass escutcheon. Case is 25” wide, 10 ¼” deep, 9” high. Cylinder is 15” x 2 ¼” with 9/84/6 teeth, one broken, some surface rust. Smooth bedplate, SN 43396. Plays, very bright lot of damper noise, should be repinned, no tune sheet, probably eight or ten tune. PRICE REDUCED TO $1200 |

|
ASH-11 Charles Paillard Cylinder Music Box With Very Long 22” Cylinder. Marked “CP&C” which I believe means Charles Paillard & Cie, a fine maker of music boxes and rarely encountered. Appears to be Sublime Harmonie Guitar or Tremolo. Unfortunately this has six broken teeth and twelve broken tips on the right comb and nine broken teeth, six broken ends, and three broken tips on the left comb. The combs originally had about 77 teeth each and this was a very nice eight tune music box. Lovely inlaid case. It has obviously had a run and requires repining. Double zithers. Plays very sluggishly, needs lubrication (in addition to everything else!). Very unusual to have a cylinder this long. PRICE REDUCED TO $1,900 |
|
|

|
OZ-72 Interchangeable Cylinder Box In Longue Marche Format. This one is sort of rough, but very interesting. We bought this with four 10 ¼” cylinders. Some rust on comb, three broken teeth and 13 missing tips, governor blades and endless missing, the gear on the spring barrel needs to be replaced. Elaborate mechanics for the Longue Marche and for selection of tune. Probably originally was on a matching table as there are no feet on the case, which needs refinishing. We have subsequently found in our stock of orphan cylinders another four cylinders that fit this music box, giving you an amazing total of EIGHT cylinders. Will be neat when restored. $2,750. |
|
|
OZ-73 Box Lot of Three Interchangeable Music Box Cylinders. Box of three interchangeable cylinders for cylinder boxes. I believe at least two of these are Ideal Mermod cylinders, all around 11", appear to be two in Guitar format, don't know on the third (which is brass). The two nickel ones are marked: G 603/53856 and G 600/52322. $700 for the lot. |
